In 1877, the firm acquired from John Crossley and Sons Limited of Dean Clough Mills, the carpet merchanting branch of their business, carried on by them for a long period in premises situated in Town Hall Street East, thus adding to their old and important cabinet and upholstery department a considerable carpet business and an influential connection. The two businesses were carried on in the different premises for some years until a constantly growing trade and increasing stock led to the move to Silver Street in 1886.
It was one of the largest furnishers in the north of England. Up to 1895, the firm had been run by 3 generations with the name Thomas Simpson. The business closed in 1957.
